Today, the number of Americans contracting diseases from tick bites far surpasses those falling ill from mosquito-borne illnesses.

On Martha’s Vineyard, which has been besieged by lone star ticks, hunting is experiencing a resurgence, with the island extending its hunting season and planning to build a new deer-processing facility. While hunting can help reduce deer populations, it may not be enough to break the disease-transmission cycle.
The United States must take bold action against these insidious parasites. A comprehensive approach that includes research into new tools, implementation of existing solutions, and a willingness to make difficult decisions about wildlife management is essential. The clock is ticking; if the country fails to act, the consequences will be dire for public health and collective well-being.
The United States has the opportunity to replicate the strategy that reduced tick populations in the past. When the colonists arrived in what would become the United States, they inadvertently turned forests into farmland and hunted white-tailed deer to near extinction by 1900. This had a profound impact on tick populations, which relied heavily on these deer for reproduction. Today, we can intentionally create an environment hostile to ticks.
However, this will not be easy. It will require cooperation between government agencies, scientists, and the general public. The development of new tools and implementation of effective tick control measures must be prioritized. The status quo is no longer acceptable; it’s time for the country to take a stand against these silent pestsilence and reclaim its territory from their grasp.
